The Camp Comfort Guide
Sleep better, sit better, and enjoy every minute at camp.
Camping doesn’t have to mean a sore back and a rough night. A few smart, easy upgrades turn “roughing it” into actually relaxing. Here’s how.
Comfort comes down to three things
Nail these and everything else gets easier. Jump to whatever you need first.
01
Sleep better
Smart bedding, warm insulation, and a calm nighttime routine so everyone wakes up rested.
02
Sit better
Comfy chairs, seat pads, footrests, and shade so hanging out at camp feels good all day.
03
Enjoy every minute
Lighting, organization, weather prep, and little routines that quietly cut the hassle.

Step 01 — Sleep better
A good night’s sleep starts with what’s under you
The ground pulls heat away fast, so insulation matters more than thickness alone. Pair a solid sleeping pad with warm bedding, a real pillow, and a little airflow — and you’ll actually want to get up in the morning.
- Insulate from below. Choose a pad with a decent R-value; add a foam pad underneath on cold nights.
- Bring a real pillow. A compressible camp pillow (or a stuff sack packed with a fleece) beats a wadded-up jacket.
- Vent the tent. Crack a window or vent to cut condensation so bedding stays dry and cozy.
- Keep a calm routine. Dim the lanterns, lay out tomorrow’s layers, and keep a headlamp within reach.
Coach Joe’s tip
Never run a fuel-burning heater or stove inside a closed tent. Warmth comes from insulation and layers — not an open flame. Keep sleeping gear a safe distance from the fire.
Step 02 — Sit better
Set up a spot you’ll actually want to linger in
So much of camp happens sitting down — meals, coffee, card games, star-gazing. A supportive chair and a bit of shade turn “fine for a while” into “stay all afternoon.”
- Pick a chair with real back support. A slightly taller back saves your shoulders over long evenings.
- Add a seat pad or footrest. Small comforts that make a huge difference on chilly or long days.
- Chase the shade. A canopy or tarp keeps the sun off and gives you a cool place to retreat.
- Arrange for easy flow. Face chairs toward the fire or view, with a table in reach for drinks and snacks.

Step 03 — Enjoy every minute
The little upgrades that quietly remove the hassle
Comfort isn’t one big thing — it’s a dozen small ones. Good light, a place for everything, and a plan for weather mean more time enjoying camp and less time hunting for the bug spray.
- Light it up. A lantern for the table, string lights for mood, and a headlamp per person.
- Give everything a home. Labeled bins and a hanging organizer stop the endless rummaging.
- Prep for weather. Pack a tarp, extra layers, and rain gear even when the forecast looks perfect.
- Make the kitchen easy. A two-burner stove, a dishpan, and pre-chopped ingredients save real time.
- Keep a few routines. Fill water at arrival, tidy before dark, and stash a small first-aid kit where everyone can find it.
